Elder Abuse: A Dark Shadow on Aging
Elder abuse, an unspoken blight on the aging process, is becoming an alarming concern in society. The transition from strong social support systems to a more individualistic culture may contribute to the neglect and abuse of vulnerable older adults.
In various parts of the world, there have been reports of elderly individuals being accused of witchcraft, leading to horrifying outcomes. Mental illness has been associated with such accusations in history, as evidenced by Europe’s witch hunts in the 16th and 17th centuries. While one might hope that such incidents no longer occur in modern societies, the recent case in Anambra State raises questions about the treatment of the elderly in today’s world.
Just as society fights for the protection of children’s rights, equal attention should be given to safeguarding the rights and well-being of the elderly. Age-related challenges, such as physical health issues and memory loss, necessitate a caring and supportive environment for our senior citizens.
It is essential for individuals, families, and communities to unite in ensuring the safety and dignity of the elderly. By addressing this pressing issue, we can aspire to create a society where aging is accompanied by respect, care, and protection for all its members.
