Former Interior Minister of France, Gérald Darmanin, extends a formal apology Liverpool fans for wrongly placing blame on fans regarding the mess that took place during the UEFA Champions League Final in Paris in 2022.
Darmanin, who is now France’s Justice Minister, corsduring an interview said that blaming English supporters for the ruckus at the Stade De France was an error on his part. Liverpool and Real Madrid’s fans were severely queuing, getting tear gassed, and peppered into stadiam by French police. Due to the anarchy surrounding the event, there was more than a 30 minute delay kick off.
Post the game, Darmanin was of the opinion that the disorder was the result of English fans utilizing bogus tickets. He has since removed his remarks claiming that there was a lack of order.
“What I did not appreciate that evening was that the problem did not stem from English supporters, but rather from hooligans mugging supporters,” he explained. “Due to my biases… it was simple to point out the culprit, and I apologize to the supporters of Liverpool.”
In other cases, UEFA was also unsuccessful at attempting to dismiss the multiple lawsuits provided by Liverpool supporters regarding compensation for the injuries and psychological trauma sustained during the incident.
