Shock gripped residents of Jikoko village in the Mpape area of the Federal Capital Territory after a newborn was discovered abandoned along a bush path near a poultry farm.
The baby, wrapped in cloth and placed inside a carton, was reportedly found early Saturday morning.
A resident of the community, Aliyu, told PUNCH that the scene left everyone speechless.
“We woke up to the sight of a day-old baby kept in a carton.
“The carton was placed along a bush path close to a poultry farm in Jikoko. The police were notified, and they took the baby to a health centre for medical attention,” he recounted.
Reacting to the incident, the FCT Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, confirmed that investigations were ongoing.
“Investigation has commenced to locate the mother of the baby. The baby is currently with the social welfare department,” she said.
Authorities have yet to identify who abandoned the child, but efforts are underway to trace the mother.
