Casualties and Injuries

In addition to the fatalities, three people were seriously hurt, and at least 20 suffered minor injuries in the crash, which occurred around 11 p.m. (2100 GMT) on the main rail corridor from Prague to the east, according to Interior Minister Vit Rakusan.

Train Details

The Ex 1021 express train, operated by the Czech private service RegioJet, was traveling overnight from Prague to Kosice in eastern Slovakia and onward to the Ukrainian town of Chop, according to the Czech Railway Administration. The Rail Safety Inspection Office reported that the passenger train had failed to stop at a red light. Determining whether the cause was human error or a technical fault could take months.

Victims

The dead included two women from Ukraine, the Ukrainian Foreign Ministry said. It was not clear whether the train drivers were among the deceased.

Company Response

RegioJet expressed its sorrow and offered support and compensation to the victims. “We will do everything for a proper investigation,” said owner Radim Jancura.

Rescue Efforts

More than 300 passengers were on board the trains. Dozens of police, fire, and emergency service units assisted in evacuating the carriages. Footage released by the fire brigade showed that at least one sleeper carriage had been mangled and derailed, and both trains’ locomotives were damaged. Police images depicted a line of emergency service vehicles and a helicopter at the scene.

Freight Train Details

Czech Television cited a fire brigade spokesperson stating that the freight train was carrying the industrial chemical calcium carbide, but no leak had occurred as the first two wagons were empty.

Bottom Line

The tragic collision in Pardubice highlights the critical importance of rail safety and the need for thorough investigations to prevent future incidents.

The prompt response from emergency services and the ongoing support from RegioJet underscore the commitment to addressing the aftermath and ensuring justice and support for those affected.
