The death toll from the devastating explosion at an Eni fuel depot near Florence has tragically risen to five. The latest victim was recovered from the rubble on Tuesday, following the blast that occurred on Monday in Calenzano, a northern suburb of the Tuscan capital.
The explosion, which took place in a loading area for tank trucks, initially claimed the lives of two individuals. Two more bodies were discovered earlier on Tuesday, and the fifth victim was found later in the day. Several others were injured, with three still hospitalized in serious condition.
Authorities have meanwhile, launched an investigation to determine the cause of the explosion and to assess any potential criminal responsibility. Eni, Italy’s largest energy company, has expressed its condolences and pledged to support those affected by the incident.
This tragic event has once again highlighted the important issue of workplace safety in Italy, where nearly 600,000 workers reported injuries last year, and 1,147 lost their lives. The local community and the nation mourn the loss of life and extend their thoughts to the families of the victims.
