While K-drama and K-pop have familiarized us with K-beauty, there’s another skincare trend worth exploring: Japanese skincare, often referred to as J-beauty.

Similar to their Korean counterparts, Japanese women are renowned for their smooth, dewy skin and youthful radiance. But unlike the extensive K-beauty routines, Japanese skincare focuses on minimalistic yet effective steps—cleansing, hydration, and sun protection.

The other ways J-beauty differs from Korean skincare is:

  1. Its focus lies on maintaining healthy skin through a mindful routine.
  2. J-beauty relies on natural ingredients like green tea, rice bran, and cherry blossom.
  3. J-beauty emphasizes lightweight, watery skincare textures for quick absorption.

The Key Aspects of J-beauty

Japanese skincare is deeply rooted in tradition, emphasizing simplicity, authenticity, and mindfulness. With this in mind, these are the key aspects:

1. Purifying: Clean skin is highly valued in Japanese skincare and it is achieved through gentle cleansing to get rid of impurities without stripping the skin of its natural oils.

2. Polishing: Komenuka (Japanese rice bran) is traditionally used for gentle yet effective exfoliation. Geishas have been using this ingredient for centuries, to smoothen and brighten their skin texture.

3. Plumping: Hydrating the skin is essential in J-beauty. Ingredients like sakura (cherry blossom) and yuzu (a citrus fruit) provide deep hydration and rejuvenation.

4. Nourishing: J-beauty prioritizes natural ingredients like green tea (UV damage fighter) and seaweed (soothing and hydrating) to nourish the skin.

With these in mind, here are some sunscreen products from Japanese brands if you’re looking to experiment with/dabble with Japanese skincare.

These sunscreens are notable for their high SPF and PA ratings, offering excellent protection against both UVA and UVB rays.

1. Biore UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence Sunscreen: This weightless and hydrating sunscreen is perfect for oily or acne-prone skin. It boasts an SPF 50 and a high PA rating.

2. Hada Labo Koi-Gokujyun UV White Gel All-in-One Sunscreen: This is a versatile sunscreen that incorporates UV protection with skincare benefits. Gentle for daily use, it offers SPF 50 and a high PA rating.

3. Shiseido Anessa Perfect UV Sunscreen Skin Care Milk: Renowned for its water-resistant formula, this sunscreen ensures lasting protection. With SPF 50 and a high PA rating, it’s a top choice.

Takeaway

J-Beauty embraces simplicity, natural ingredients, and mindful routines. From gentle cleansing to deep hydration, it prioritizes healthy, radiant skin. However, if you’re looking to try your hands with the trend, it is helpful to remember that less is more when it comes to achieving that coveted Japanese glow.
