There was a recent subject of online discourse between a Nigerian dentist, Eberechi, and a fundraiser that had been launched by a TikTok influencer known as Habeeb Hamzat, alias Peller. According to Peller, his girlfriend, Aminata Elizabeth Amadou, Jarvis, required a sum of N30 million for a tumour surgery, and he had opened a GoFundMe to collect the funds.
Reacting, Eberechi had taken to the social media to query the cost. He said the surgery, plus tests, among other things, would run less than N500,000 at his clinic. He went further to insinuate that Peller might be using the campaign as a means to fund an overly extravagant December celebration.
Eberechi’s comments immediately went viral as Nigerians argued between themselves whether the fundraiser was genuine or exaggerated. The divergent opinions have raised questions over transparency in online fundraisers and elicited mixed reactions on social media.
