Russia conducted a large-scale missile attack on Ukraine, resulting in the tragic death of 12 civilians. The assault, which struck Kyiv, the south, and west of the country, caused extensive damage to residential buildings, leaving dozens wounded and ten individuals trapped under rubble in Kyiv.
A warehouse in Kyiv, damaged by falling debris, held ten people captive, as a maternity ward in Dnipro suffered damage, though no casualties were reported. Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba urgently called for increased international support, emphasizing the global significance of the explosions witnessed by millions of Ukrainians.
The devastating aerial assault, reportedly involving approximately 110 missiles, marked a significant military escalation. President Volodymyr Zelenskiy confirmed the substantial defensive efforts, with most missiles intercepted. Air Force Commander Mykola Oleshchuk labeled the strike as Russia’s most extensive aerial barrage since the February 2022 invasion.
General Valeriy Zaluzhnyi, Ukraine’s army chief, disclosed that the attack specifically targeted critical infrastructure, industrial zones, and military facilities. The absence of immediate comments from Russia added to the uncertainty surrounding the situation.
The repercussions extended to power outages reported in various regions, including southern Odesa, northeastern Kharkiv, central Dnipropetrovsk, and central Kyiv. Ukraine’s prior warnings about Russia potentially targeting the energy system were tragically realized, reminiscent of last year’s power grid strikes.
The toll on human lives and infrastructure was devastating. Five people lost their lives in Dnipropetrovsk, where missiles struck a shopping center, a private residence, and a six-story residential building. Further casualties were reported in the Black Sea port city of Odesa and Lviv region, which shares a border with NATO member Poland.
Missiles targeted critical infrastructure in Lviv, resulting in casualties and damage to schools and a kindergarten. The northeastern city of Kharkiv also faced the brunt of the assault, with casualties reported from strikes on a warehouse, industrial facility, medical facility, and transport depot.
As the international community grapples with the gravity of the situation, the devastating missile assault underscores the urgent need for a diplomatic resolution to the ongoing conflict.
