Background of the Case

The Benin High Court will hear the case brought by the suspended Dukes of Evbuobanosa and Egbaen Siluko, Prof. Gregory Akenzua and Chief Edomwonyi Ogiegbaen, who are challenging their suspension by the Oba of Benin. The last hearing on May 9 witnessed over 100 priests, priestesses, and palace chiefs storming the court, chanting curses against the Oba’s perceived enemies.

Government’s Stance

In response to the social media posts, the Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Nehikhare, issued a statement condemning the incitement to disrupt court proceedings. Nehikhare emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and allowing judicial processes to proceed without intimidation or disruption.

“The Edo State Government condemns in the strongest terms the recent posts circulating on social media platforms inciting and urging people to disrupt the operations of the Benin High Court on Monday, July 15,” Nehikhare stated.

Political Manipulation and Call for Peace

Nehikhare also highlighted that certain unscrupulous politicians are suspected of sponsoring violence to disrupt the state’s peace for political gain. He urged the youth not to be manipulated into violence and called on parents to protect their children from being exploited for such purposes.

“We call on youths in the state not to allow themselves to be used to perpetuate violence and cause crisis in the State. We also call on parents to protect their children from being exploited by persons who want to disrupt peace for political gains.”

Government’s Warning and Appeal

The state government warned that it would take lawful action against anyone found to be undermining peace in Edo State. Nehikhare urged law-abiding citizens to reject calls to disrupt peace and to maintain public order.

“The Edo State Government will take all lawful actions against any individual or group found to be involved in activities that undermine the peace in the State. We urge all law-abiding citizens to reject and ignore any calls to disrupt the peace in the State and to refrain from engaging in any actions that could jeopardize public order.”

Bottom Line

The Edo State Government’s condemnation of calls to disrupt the Benin High Court proceedings underscores the importance of maintaining law and order. The government’s firm stance against political manipulation and incitement to violence reflects its commitment to safeguarding the state’s peace and judicial integrity. Citizens are encouraged to support the government in preserving the harmony and stability of Edo State.
