Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, has received the report of an Administrative Panel of Enquiry investigating the financial dealings of 18 impeached Local Government Chairmen. The panel, established on December 18th, 2024, examined the period from September 4th, 2023, to November 2024. According to a statement released by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Fred Itua, on Sunday, the Governor intends to forward the report’s findings to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Key Findings of the Panel

The Chairman of the panel, Solomon Imohiosen, presented the report and recommendations to Governor Okpebholo. The findings revealed significant financial irregularities, with approximately ₦96 billion in public funds either mismanaged or diverted to private accounts. The panel’s forensic investigation detailed the following:

Misuse of JAAC Funds: The 18 Local Government Areas received a total of ₦95 billion from the Joint Allocation Account Committee (JAAC) during the period under review. However, the panel found a lack of corresponding projects or infrastructure development to justify the expenditure of these funds.

Fraudulent Diversion of Funds: The report alleges the fraudulent diversion of over ₦10 billion through a pseudo-account named “Security, Environment and Training.” This account allegedly served as a conduit for transferring funds to various individuals and companies. The panel claims that the impeached Local Government Chairmen contributed to this scheme.

Implicated Individuals: Beyond the impeached Local Government Chairmen, the report reportedly implicates former Governor Godwin Obaseki and leaders of a factional Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Allegations of Systemic Corruption

The panel’s report paints a picture of systemic corruption within the Local Government system. The alleged diversion of significant funds, the lack of accountability for public spending, and the involvement of prominent figures highlight the severity of the situation.

Conclusion

The submission of this report marks a significant step in addressing allegations of widespread financial impropriety within Edo State’s Local Government system. Governor Okpebholo’s decision to refer the findings to the EFCC demonstrates a commitment to transparency and accountability. The investigation’s outcome will be crucial in determining the extent of the alleged corruption and holding those responsible accountable under the law. The public awaits the EFCC’s investigation and subsequent actions to bring closure to this matter and restore public trust in the governance of Edo State..
