Well-known crossdresser, Idris Okuneye, aka Bobrisky, has just been apprehended by the officers of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC in Lagos State on Wednesday, April 3 evening.
Bobrisky was arrested at Pinnock Estate in Lagos on Wednesday for currency mutilation and damaging the Naira.
Dele Oyewale, the spokesperson for the commission, had confirmed this, with a promise to issue an official statement regarding the development.
“It is true our boys arrested him yesterday evening in Lagos for Naira abuse. We don’t have anything to do with his lifestyle (being a cross-dresser). He was suspected of committing an economic crime and that was the reason for his arrest,” Oyewale had said.
Bobrisky’s arrest is coming after the Nigeria Police Force announced that it lacked enough evidence to arrest him for same-sex activities.
In recent days, there have been calls for Bobrisky’s arrest, especially after social media influencer and blogger, Martins Vincent Otse, aka VeryDarkMan had in recent videos condemned the award of Best Dressed Female to the cross-dresser at a Nollywood event.
However, the Force Public Relations Officers, Olumuyiwa Ademola told Channels TV on Tuesday that cross-dressers cannot be apprehended and detained because Nigeria has no law against cross-dressers and cross-dressing.
The Nigerian Same-Sex Marriage (Prohibition) Bill was signed into law on January 7, 2014, by the then-President Goodluck Jonathan.
The law criminalises public displays of affection between same-sex couples.
