After months of failed attempts to bring Yahaya Bello to account, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has successfully detained the former Kogi State governor. Bello was taken into custody on Tuesday after presenting himself at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja.

Official Confirmation of Detention

The EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, confirmed the detention, stating that the Commission’s chief security officer arrested Bello upon his arrival. Speaking to journalists, Oyewale said, “It is true that we have him in our custody. The operatives of the Commission arrested him.”

Bello’s Visit to EFCC Headquarters

The former governor voluntarily appeared at the EFCC office on Tuesday morning, accompanied by his legal team. This marked a shift from months of evading repeated EFCC invitations regarding allegations of financial misappropriation.

However, Governor Usman Ododo, Bello’s successor in Kogi State, who had accompanied him to the EFCC office during a prior visit, was absent from this recent entourage.

Yahaya Bello has faced scrutiny over allegations of misappropriating N80.2 billion during his tenure as governor. On April 18, 2024, the EFCC declared him wanted in connection with money laundering charges. His recent detention signals a breakthrough in the Commission’s efforts to address the allegations.

Bottom Line

The detention of Yahaya Bello underscores the EFCC’s determination to hold public officials accountable for financial misconduct. As the investigation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the case will impact the fight against corruption and accountability in governance.
