Charges Against Yahaya Bello

The EFCC’s charges against Bello include serious allegations of money laundering and the misappropriation of public funds totaling N80.2 billion. Since then, all efforts to arrest him proved unsuccessful leading to the commission declaring Bello wanted. The commission expresses its firm stance and commitment to see justice being served in Yahaya Bello case, maintaining its integrity and commitment to fight financial crimes.

Court of Appeal Orders Bello to Surrender

On August 20, the Court of Appeal in Abuja ordered Yahaya Bello to surrender himself for arraignment by the EFCC. Dele Oyewale, head of media and publicity for the EFCC, described the court’s ruling as a “vindication” of the EFCC’s stance, reinforcing the commission’s determination to bring Bello to trial.

EFCC’s Commitment to Justice

During an interview on News Central TV, Oyewale emphasized that the court’s ruling reinforces the EFCC’s position that Bello must face trial. “What the court of appeal is saying is just to amplify the position of the commission and also to establish the fact that we are focused concerning his matter,” Oyewale said.

Dismissal of Neglect Claims

Oyewale dismissed claims that the EFCC was neglecting certain cases, insisting that all matters before the commission receive the “necessary attention.” He explained that delays in some cases are due to procedural issues and the commission’s strict adherence to the rule of law.

Collaborative Efforts for Bello’s Arrest

The EFCC is working closely with both local and international law enforcement agencies to ensure Yahaya Bello’s arrest. Oyewale indicated that Bello has gone into hiding, stating, “As it is now, Yahaya Bello cannot come into the open. He cannot make himself available anywhere because he has become a fugitive, and we all know the instruments of the law—anywhere he is sighted, he would be arrested.”

Assurance of EFCC’s Focus

Oyewale assured Nigerians that the EFCC remains focused on resolving Bello’s case, along with other ongoing investigations. The commission is determined to ensure that justice is served in all cases under its purview.
