Egypt Accused of Unlawfully Deporting Sudanese Refugees Fleeing War

Egypt stands accused of carrying out mass arrests and unlawful deportations of thousands of refugees fleeing the brutal war in neighboring Sudan, according to a new report by human rights watchdog Amnesty International.

The report, released on June 19, 2024, details disturbing accounts of collective expulsions, with refugees denied the chance to seek asylum or contest their deportation. Amnesty documented over 800 such cases between January and March of this year alone.

The report further alleges that detained refugees faced cruel and inhuman conditions prior to deportation. Specific details include the arbitrary arrest of 27 Sudanese refugees, many of whom were ultimately expelled.

The exact number of those arrested and deported remains unclear. The UN refugee agency estimates thousands were deported in late 2023, with many being Sudanese.

Egypt’s government did not respond to requests for comment on the report’s findings. The National Council for Human Rights, an Egyptian government body, reportedly denied the claims of increased arrests and deportations, insisting authorities uphold international law.

Why It Matters

Amnesty suggests the crackdown began in September 2023 and involved plainclothes police conducting random checks targeting Black people. Those without proper identification or residency permits faced arrest. These checks reportedly occur frequently in major Egyptian cities with significant Sudanese populations.

The war in Sudan, which erupted in April 2023, has triggered the world’s largest displacement crisis. Over nine million people have been displaced within Sudan or fled to neighboring countries.

Egypt, a major destination for fleeing Sudanese, received over 500,000 refugees. This influx has caused some tension. Egyptian citizens have voiced concerns about rising rent prices and the strain on resources amidst economic challenges.
