In a never-ending drama, the former Central Bank Governor, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, finds himself in a bail whirlwind. Justice Hamza Muazu of the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja granted him bail at a whopping sum of N300 million, with a side order of two sureties needing property certificates within the Maitama District.
Now, here’s the catch: Emefiele must surrender all his travel documents, play Abuja local, and reside within the Abuja Municipal Council. But wait, there’s more! He’s chilling at the Kuje Correctional Centre until he fulfills these bail criteria.
This déjà vu happened before – four months ago in Lagos, where he was handed a bail ticket of N20 million. But guess what? The government threw a six-count charge party at him for alleged procurement shenanigans amounting to a staggering N1.6 billion.
The allegations revolve around Emefiele’s supposed shopping spree for cars between 2018 and 2020, where he apparently splurged on 43 vehicles worth a jaw-dropping N1.2 billion. Also, he supposedly threw in a contract for 37 Toyota Hilux Vehicles valued at N854 million, all leading to this legal dance.
Now, November’s the month! Court dates are set: November 22 for his bail fate and November 28 to roll the trial dice. But in the meantime, Emefiele’s got a fancy address at the Kuje Correctional Centre.
Let’s hope this time there’s no problem, and Emefiele gets his freedom. Peace for all, drama for none!
