The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arraigned Nweke Izuchukwu Jude at the Federal High Court in Enugu on allegations of impersonating EFCC officers.

In a statement released on Monday via X, the EFCC reported that Jude appeared before Justice Mohammed Garba Umar on two charges related to impersonation and obtaining N1,100,000 (One Million, One Hundred Thousand Naira) under false pretenses. The charge sheet states that in April 2024, in Enugu, Nweke Izuchukwu Jude, with intent to defraud, obtained N1,100,000 from Justin Chidozie Chukwukere by falsely claiming to be an EFCC officer.

This offense violates Section 1 of the Advance Fee Fraud and Other Fraud Related Offences Act, 2006, and is punishable under Section 1(3) of the same Act. Jude pleaded not guilty to the charges in court. EFCC prosecutor Ajobiewe Rotimi Enitan then requested a trial date and that Jude be held at the Enugu State Correctional Facility until the trial.

Defense counsel E.S. Umeojiakor mentioned a pending bail application and asked for Jude to be released on lenient terms. Justice Umar, after considering both sides, granted bail with the following conditions: a bail amount of N2 million, two sureties of equal amount, residency within the court’s jurisdiction, one surety owning property within the jurisdiction, and verification by the court Registrar.

The case was adjourned to October 9, 2024, for trial, and the defendant was remanded at the Enugu State Correctional Facility until his bail conditions are met.
