Just a few days before the elections and INEC offices are still being attacked, this is an indication that the election might not be free and fair as promised.

Reports have it that the Independent Electoral Commission office was attacked by some unknown gunmen in Enugu South L.G.A of the state.

Festus Okoye, on Monday, gave this information to news respondents in a statement, by the National Commissioner and Chairman, information and voter Education Committee.

According to the statement, the alleged attack occurred around 9:12 pm on Sunday, the gunmen went as far as burning the gatehouse to gain access to the building but could not gain access as men of the Nigerian police force and Army officers immediately responded to the call of distress.

Unfortunately, the two policemen deployed to protect the place were attacked one was shot dead and the other sustained serious injury.

All the relevant officers have gathered together, to discuss the recent attacks on several INEC offices.

The statement read, “The Resident Electoral Commissioner for Enugu State, Dr.
Chukwuemeka Chukwu, has reported that our office in Enugu South Local Government Area was attacked by unknown gunmen. The incident occurred around 9.12 pm yesterday, Sunday, January 15, 2023.

“The security gatehouse was razed. Fortunately, the attackers could not gain access to the main building as a result of the rapid response from the Police and Army officers from the 82 Division. The State Commissioner of Police and the REC were personally at the scene immediately after they received information about

“Of the two policemen deployed to protect the facility, one of them lost his life while the other sustained injuries and is receiving treatment. The commission prays for the repose of the soul of the deceased policeman and the speedy recovery of the injured.

The report has it that, there have been over 50 attacks in different INEC offices in the last four years, with Imo state topping the list.

This isn’t the first time INEC offices in several states have been attacked, in this year
alone, a lot of attacks have been spearheaded in Imo state. The reason why INEC
offices are being attacked is still unknown to Nigerians, it’s just some days to the
Election, and Nigerians are scared that this year’s election won’t be free and fair,
considering the attacks here and there this might even prevent Nigerians from coming out to vote.

With insecurity ravaging everywhere in Nigeria, Nigerians are eager for power to
change hands, really eager for a new Messiah to emerge and restore the country to a state of normalcy, where things will be normal, the standard of living will reduce, food will be surplus and security will be tight and Nigerians will not be subject to hardship.

That Messiah will not happen, if we don’t vote, everyone should make sure they cast
their vote come February 25.
