Romania and Slovakia Draw, Both Advance

Romania and Slovakia played out a 1-1 draw at the Deutsche Bank Park in Frankfurt, a result that saw both teams progress from Group E. Despite stormy conditions, both sides aimed for victory rather than settling for a safe draw. Slovakia struck first through Ondrej Duda, who headed home Juraj Kucka’s pinpoint cross, making him the first Slovak to score in two separate Euros. Romania quickly responded with a Răzvan Marin penalty, awarded after a VAR check confirmed a foul on Ianis Hagi. The second half saw end-to-end action but no further goals, securing both teams’ advancement. Slovakia, slightly disappointed not to win, achieved their primary goal of reaching the knockout stage, while Romania celebrated their first progression to the Round of 16 since 2000.

Belgium and Ukraine Stalemate Sees Belgium Through

In the first-ever meeting between Belgium and Ukraine, a goalless draw at the Waldstadion in Frankfurt saw Belgium advance from Group E on goals scored. Belgium’s Kevin De Bruyne created several early chances, including a golden opportunity for Romelu Lukaku, who continued his run of bad luck by failing to beat Ukrainian goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin. Ukraine, resilient in defense, struggled to create clear-cut chances. Both sides pushed for a winner in the second half, but neither could break the deadlock. Belgium’s progression sets up a daunting Round of 16 clash against France, while Ukraine’s goal difference left them at the bottom of the group.

Turkey Edges Past 10-Man Czech Republic to Secure Knockout Spot

Turkey clinched a hard-fought 2-1 victory over a determined, 10-man Czech Republic to secure their place in the Round of 16. The Czechs, needing a win to advance, were dealt a blow when Antonín Barák received a controversial second yellow card in the first half.

Turkey capitalized on their numerical advantage with Hakan Çalhanoğlu’s strike early in the second half. Despite Tomas Souček equalizing after Mert Günok’s mishap, Cenk Tosun sealed the win for Turkey with a stoppage-time goal. Turkey’s win sends them to a clash against Austria, while the Czech Republic exits without a group stage win for only the second time in their history.

Georgia Shocks Portugal to Advance

In a stunning turn of events, Georgia defeated Group F winners Portugal 2-0 to secure a historic place in the knockout stages. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring within two minutes, and Georgia’s disciplined defense held firm against Portugal’s attacks. Georges Mikautadze doubled the lead from the penalty spot in the second half, following a VAR-confirmed foul by António Silva. Despite late pressure from Portugal, Georgia held on to book their place in the Round of 16, where they will face Spain. Portugal, who had already secured their knockout spot, will look to rebound against Slovenia in the next round.

The Round of 16 promises high-stakes drama and potential upsets as the Euro 2024 tournament intensifies, with each match offering a blend of elite competition and the chance for underdogs to continue their remarkable journeys.
