Former international goalkeeper, Dosu Joseph, who was in goal when Nigeria won the gold medal at the football event of the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, USA has put up the boots he wore at the competition on e-commerce site eBay.
Announcing this was the ex-Julius Berger FC of Lagos goalkeeper himself via his Facebook account on Wednesday afternoon.
Dosu wrote thusly: “The soccer boot worn by Dosu Joseph (Adidas Beckenbauer Cup) during the Atlanta 96, going on EBay soon……Lobatan”
The 48-year old was in goal for all six of Nigeria’s gamte in their march towards the gold medal. After keeping clean sheets in their first two games, Dosu conceded a goal in the 1-0 loss to Brazil in their final group game.
Another clean sheet in the quarter-final against Mexico preceded the three goals he shipped in the 4-3 win in the classic against Brazil when Nigeria came from three goals to one to win an improbable semi-final. Against Argentina in the final, Dosu conceded another two goals but Nigeria triumphed 3-2 and ultimately won the gold medal.
Dosu was part of the historic team which won Africa’s first gold medal in football and also helped the Super Eagles to qualify for a second FIFA World Cup appearance in France ’98.
An unfortunate car accident on the night of June 7, 1997 while out celebrating Nigeria’s World Cup qualification earlier in the day after a 3-0 win over Kenya, brought his career to an abrupt end.
After a miraculous recuperation from the crash, Dosu took time to piece his life together and is now the proprietor of Dosu Joseph Football Academy which has trained and sent a lot of players on a career in Europe.
