French police apprehended a 33-year-old man on Tuesday, suspected of brutally attacking and killing his wife and four children with a knife on Christmas Day, as reported by a public prosecutor. It was discovered on Monday night in Meaux, a town located 40 km (25 miles) northeast of Paris, where the lifeless bodies were found in a blood-stained apartment.
According to local prosecutor Jean-Baptiste Bladier, the mother and two daughters had sustained multiple stab wounds, making it challenging to determine the extent of the assault. The two younger sons appeared to have been suffocated or drowned. The authorities took the children’s father into custody at his residence in a nearby town on Monday night, initiating a murder investigation.
The victims, ranging in age from 9 months to 10 years, suffered a horrifying fate, with neighbors reporting screams during the early hours of Christmas Day. Concerns escalated when attempts to contact the family went unanswered.
The prosecutor disclosed that the husband had a history of mental illness. In 2019, he assaulted his wife with a knife, but charges were not pressed, and the case was dropped due to his mental health at the time. Investigative efforts revealed medical documents and prescriptions for anti-depressants in the family’s residence, shedding light on potential contributing factors to this devastating incident.
