Minister’s Announcement

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, made the announcement on Friday, acknowledging the widespread outcry.

Implementation Details

According to Odutayo Oluseyi, spokesperson for the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, the minister’s directive became effective on Thursday, May 30, 2024.

Stakeholder Reactions

The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) rejected the fee, citing its detrimental effects on chopper operators and the Nigerian economy. Further actions will be taken pending the submission and review of a report by a designated committee.

Suspension Rationale

In response to industry stakeholders’ calls for a review, Minister Keyamo has temporarily halted the fee’s enforcement. A committee has been established to address stakeholders’ concerns and provide recommendations by the end of June 2024.

Stakeholders’ Concerns

Aviation stakeholders express concern over the multitude of taxes burdening airline operators, including a 13.5% tax exposure even before corporate taxes, PAYE, and pension scheme contributions.

Importance of the Issue

The imposition of numerous taxes without considering their repercussions on businesses signifies a broader issue affecting various sectors. Addressing these concerns is crucial for mitigating adverse effects on the economy.

Conclusion

The government’s decision to suspend the contentious helicopter landing fee highlights the necessity for comprehensive taxation policy reviews to safeguard businesses and the economy from detrimental impacts.
