A great deal of aggrieved residents from communities along the Ibadan – Iwo Road have staged a peaceful protest at the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) office in Ibadan on Monday.
According to reports, the residents had charged the IBEDC office situated at Alabebe area, early Monday morning, to drive home their demands, stating that the protest was against the unsteady supply of electricity to their communities.
The residents had while protesting, blocked part of Ibadan – Iwo Road (a major route that links Ibadan in Oyo State with Iwo in Osun State), to really press home, the urgency of their demands.
Some of the communities affected by the erratic power supply include Olodo, Monatan, Alabebe, Iyana Church, Lalupon, Eji Oku, Iyana Offa, Adeleye, Lagun, Adewumi, Trailer Park, Erunmu, Fatumo, Atari and Ile-Igbon.
This development prompted the IBEDC to shut down their office to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
Why It Matters
The irregular power supply has undoubtedly adversely affected businesses and livelihoods of the residents. Artisans and residents who rely on electricity face challenges, leading some to move away from the community. This economic impact is a primary concern for the protesters.
The protest’s timing (early Monday morning) and the blocking of a major road highlights the urgency and frustration felt by the affected communities. It sends a clear message that the situation is unbearable and requires immediate attention.
By taking to the streets, they are demanding accountability from the IBEDC and highlighting the impact of erratic power supply on their daily lives.
