WHAT HAPPENED?
Despite having a talented squad, Nigeria has struggled to make a consistent impact in continental competitions.
The team will have another chance to please their fans when they compete against the other 23 teams for the prestigious title.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
The West African country has won the Afcon three times, the most recent victory being in 2013. They have placed second four times and won bronze eight times.
The Super Eagles were eliminated in the Round of 16 in the most recent edition, which was hosted in Cameroon.
Iwobi has assured that things would be different for the fans this time.
WHAT IWOBI SAID
Iwobi told the Super Eagles media team, “The fans know the quality we have in the team, from each man that is in the squad and the ones that didn’t make it.”
“The team has a wealth of talent. We are certain that we can succeed in this competition, but we still need to show the supporters that we are capable of doing so. They may be confident we’ll bring honor to the country.
We’ve made good preparations, and we’re currently in Abu Dhabi. Before the Afcon, we have a few [friendly matches] to prepare. We are practicing well, the team is nearly complete, and everyone is nearly finished here.”
