Gambian soldiers tear down campaign posters of opposition politician Mayor Taliba Ahmed Bensouda just two days before Gambia’s mayoral and local elections.
Bensouda is running for re-election in Kanifin, Gambia’s largest municipality. He took office in 2018 under President Adama Barrow’s original political body, the United Democratic Party (UDP).
But then President Barrow broke with the UDP and founded his own National People’s Party.
Many observers now expect Bensouda to be perhaps the biggest challenger in the 2026 presidential election.
The military’s actions sparked outrage among Gambians, who condemned the military’s actions.
Gambians have called on the military to stay out of politics and fix its bad image.
