Axxela Limited and NGML have launched a 5km natural gas pipeline network on Victoria Island that connects Eko Atlantic City and Lagos.
This milestone is a key breakthrough in Axxela and NGML’s continuing 72.5km pipeline infrastructure project, which will connect Victoria Island to the Lekki metropolis.
The freshly commissioned 5km pipeline network, which runs from Outer Marina to Kuramo Beach, is the project’s first phase and is expected to connect customers from the Five Cowrie River near the Army Officers’ Mess in Bonny Camp to the future Lekki International Airport.
According to Axxela’s Chief Operating Officer, Kehinde Alabi, “The commissioning of the first phase of this ambitious 72.5km pipeline network shows our commitment to expanding natural gas infrastructure in the Greater Lagos Area.
” As a pioneer client on this axis, we are paving the road for increased access to the natural gas advantage, delivering dependable energy solutions that can boost economic development.
“ For us at Axxela, we are not only fuelling enterprises, but also facilitating the establishment of self-sustaining clusters that will strengthen Nigeria’s socioeconomic growth.”
Justin Ezeala, Managing Director of NNPC Gas Marketing Limited (NGML), said, “Over the last two decades, NGML and Axxela have been renowned for their pioneering efforts and immense contribution to natural gas advocacy, this expansion project is a further reaffirmation of our partnership and dedication to natural gas infrastructure development across Nigeria and Africa.
“We believe that expanding the natural gas pipeline network to the highly commercial Victoria Island and fast developing Lekki area is a step in the right direction.”
David Frame, Managing Director of Eko Atlantic City, emphasised the importance of being the first customer to connect and benefit from the project.
“This breakthrough not only provides a more efficient, steady, inexpensive, and dependable supply of energy for our power generation requirements, but it also establishes a high standard for modern urban living. Beyond the enormous socioeconomic benefit, natural gas’s sustainable nature is consistent with our objective of building a future-ready city that prioritises energy efficiency and environmental sustainability.”
“The collaboration between Axxela, NGML, and Eko Atlantic City will assist the urban coastal city satisfy its energy needs in an efficient and reliable manner.
Eko Atlantic City is currently establishing a 60MW gas-powered plant infrastructure, which is projected to be operational in the following years.
As this future metropolis grows, its electricity requirements become significant and vital for both residential and commercial operations. Axxela, a world leader in natural gas processing, distribution, and power development, has extensive expertise delivering piped gas to about 200 industrial and commercial customers through a massive natural gas infrastructure network.
Eko Atlantic City, also known as Nigeria’s International Commercial Centre, is an innovative seaside city in the heart of Victoria Island. With its magnificent infrastructural architecture that includes world-class, large-scale financial, residential, and commercial complexes, the city has established itself as an obvious economic hub.
This new city development embodies self-sufficiency and sustainability through innovative urban planning, electricity generation, engineering, and technology.
Upon completion, the project will increase domestic gas utilisation because companies and businesses along the Victoria Island-Lekki corridor will have access to pipeline network infrastructure, and natural gas will be readily available for use in a variety of market segments such as cooling, feedstock for industries, and decentralised power solutions, among others.
In Essence
By providing a more reliable and cost-effective energy source, the pipeline supports economic development in the region. Access to natural gas can lower energy costs for businesses, increase operational efficiency, and attract further investments, fostering a more vibrant economic environment.
Natural gas is a cleaner alternative to many other fossil fuels, and its use aligns with global efforts towards more sustainable energy solutions.
The emphasis on natural gas as part of Eko Atlantic City’s energy strategy highlights a commitment to reducing carbon emissions and promoting environmental sustainability in urban development.
