Well-known Nigerian actor, Chinedu Ikedieze, aka Aki, has remarked that the social media phrase “Old Nollywood vs New Nollywood” was invented by overzealous Gen Z performers in an attempt to insert their superiority as those set of actors were always trying to make it look like they were the “best” and of “Hollywood standard.”
While airing his opinion in the latest episode of TeaTalk podcast hosted by acclaimed host, Toke Makinwa, Ikedieze had said that the Gen Zs in Nollywood were trying to make it look like they were the latest and knew everything.
Comedian Bovi, who had been a fellow guest on the podcast had however, disagreed with him.
In Bovi’s opinion, it wasn’t just a Gen Z thing.
“I think it’s a general opinion in Nigeria but let me speak on only the entertainment industry. The Veterans tend to look down on newcomers. They would be like, ‘Who’s this guy? He can not behave himself. Does he know how long you’ve been doing it?’”
They [older actors] have always done that. The reason many of us associate with people like you [Ikedieze] is because when we came into the industry, you didn’t insult us. However, the snobs are out there… Everybody knows them. And now they act all cool.
“So, the know-it-all airs is not just a Gen Z thing, the Old Nollywood, there are a lot of them who have seniority complexes,” Bovi said.
