The implementation of the new N70,000 minimum wage must of necessity have consequential adjustments, Gombe State’s governor, Mohammed Inuwa Yahaya has emphasized. The governor stated this after a meeting with Vice President Kashim Shettima at the Presidential Villa while addressing State House correspondents.

His deputy chairs a committee to ensure smooth implementation in collaboration with labor unions and other stakeholders. Governor Yahaya said it is crucial to plan carefully and that “every state ought to follow the process precisely and cautiously.”

When asked about the state’s readiness, he said: “There has been a standing committee since 2020 for Gombe which is led by the Deputy Governor engaging in discussions with labour unions so as to do this seamlessly.”

The governor later reaffirmed that the scheduled date for implementation is in line with Senate President’s directive; old N30,000 minimum wage will expire on April 18 2024 while new wage will take place in May.

Governor Yahaya’s commitment to responsible implementation emphasises the necessity of consequential adjustments in setting fair and sustainable wages for Gombe State workforce.
