In response to the violent unrest that erupted in Rivers State on Monday, October 7, 2024, Governor Siminalayi Fubara has set up a Judicial Commission of Inquiry to investigate the arson, killings, and destruction of property at various local government council headquarters. The governor has vowed to ensure that those responsible for the crisis will face justice, emphasizing that, with the full involvement of the Department of State Services (DSS) and the state police, all perpetrators will be brought to book.

A statement from the Secretary to the State Government, Tammy Danagogo, explained that the governor’s authority to establish the commission comes from Section 2 of the Commissions of Inquiry Law, Cap 30, Laws of Rivers State of Nigeria, 1999.

The commission members are as follows:

– Justice I.R. Minakiri – Chairman
– Inyingi Brown – Secretary
– Felicia Nwoke, Professor Blessing Didia, Samuel Egbe, and Venerable Alex Usifor – Members

Uzor Ikenga will serve as counsel to the commission.

The members of the commission are scheduled to be sworn in on Tuesday, October 8, 2024, at 4 p.m., at the Executive Council Chambers, Government House, Port Harcourt.
