The death toll in the tragic incident involving Greek migrants has increased, and individuals suspected of being smugglers have been apprehended.
The alleged smugglers, responsible for the deaths of numerous migrants in a shipwreck in the Mediterranean Sea, are expected to face charges of manslaughter in a Greek court. Meanwhile, Pakistan has detained twelve suspects in connection with the disaster.
Two more bodies were recovered by Greece on Monday, bringing the confirmed number of fatalities to 80. The incident occurred when a fishing boat, carrying hundreds of migrants on a journey from Libya to Italy, sank off the southwest coast of Greece.
Only 104 survivors have been accounted for.
The lawyers representing the nine suspected smugglers, all of whom are from Egypt and held in Greece, have requested a postponement of their arraignment hearing until Tuesday morning. One of the lawyers claimed that his client denies being a smuggler and instead asserts that he is a victim who paid to be transported to Italy.
Greece is continuing its search efforts in the sea, although the chances of finding more survivors are considered to be extremely low because the boat sank in one of the deepest areas of the Mediterranean.
The victims are believed to be from Syria, Pakistan, and Egypt.
