Why It Matters

The attacks have heightened fear and insecurity in these communities. The assailants, suspected to be enforcing the Monday sit-at-home directive, shot indiscriminately, causing chaos and endangering lives. This incident underscores the volatile security situation in the region, which affects local businesses and daily life.

What Happened

Sources reported that tragedy first struck in Nnewi around 11 am when the gunmen killed a vigilante commander, known locally as “Tallest.” The assailants arrived in three vehicles and targeted a popular hotel in Nnewichi, abducting an individual and stealing mobile phones and other valuables from those present. The vigilante commander pursued the gunmen but was shot at Nnobi in Idemili South LGA.

In a similar fashion, the gunmen invaded the Nnobi community in a black Landcruiser SUV, opening fire on vigilante operatives and seriously injuring two. Eyewitnesses recounted that the gunmen proceeded to a burial ceremony, killing two more individuals. They then moved to Afor Nnobi, where they shot dead three security personnel, and continued to Ahuda, killing one more person. The injured were rushed to a hospital in Nnewi, where they are receiving medical treatment.

What They Are Saying

When contacted, Police Public Relations Officer in Anambra State, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the attacks but stated he had not yet received full details. Ikenga promised to update the public with relevant information in due course.

Bottom Line

The recent attacks in Nnewi and Nnobi highlight the growing insecurity in Anambra State. As investigations continue, the need for enhanced security measures to protect residents and restore peace in the affected communities becomes increasingly urgent.
