Viktor Gyokeres, the new striker at Arsenal, insists that he has no plans of inviting comparisons with Thierry Henry after he got the iconic No.14 shirt that was last worn by the club legend.
The Swedish international was turned out to be Arsenal’s most recent signing on Saturday after coming from Sporting CP following a very good run in Portugal where he scored 97 goals in 102 appearances across all competitions, including 68 in the Primeira Liga.
Gyokeres who bagged 39 goals last season — more than all of Arsenal’s forwards combined — is likely to offer Mikel Arteta’s title-chasing squad a major boost.
The No.14 shirt at Arsenal carries a lot of history because of Henry’s legendary status, the Frenchman scoring 228 goals in 377 appearances and winning two Premier League titles and four Golden Boots.
However, the new Arsenal man did not give much weight to the matter and stated that the shirt number was only a practical decision.
“The numbers that were available were not that many, and after I saw 14 was still free, the choice was simple,” he said. “Of course, I am aware of the history but I am not here to be compared. Henry was a fantastic player, but I am different. I just want to do my own thing and prove my quality.”
