After the international break, the big leagues of Europe return with a bang this weekend. The program includes high-stakes derby matches and culturally significant fixtures across England, Italy, and Spain. The football fans will have their appetite whetted for the dramatic matches staged just before next week’s Champions League kickoff.

Manchester Derby Headlines Premier League Return

The standout single fixture of the Premier League is on Sunday when Manchester City host Manchester United at the Etihad. United overturned the result of this encounter last time with a 2-1 victory under Ruben Amorim, but their squad looks very stale now. With André Onana having left for Trabzonspor and a number of players who were on the fringes being sent out, Amorim’s side will be heavily dependent on the new players.

City are now called upon to display their stability and patience in the face of regaining form. Pep’s men, who celebrated a four-goal rout of the Wolves on opening day, have experienced two setbacks in a row—against Spurs and Brighton. As always, Erling Haaland will be in the spotlight, the Norwegian international who scored five goals in the match against Moldova will surely bring that form to the derby.

Heavyweight Clashes Await as Europe’s Big Leagues Return

Arsenal Face Big Ange’s Forest

The early Saturday game has Arsenal playing Nottingham Forest at home, which is now under the leadership of Ange Postecoglou. The ex-Spurs boss inherits a side that is going back to Europe for the first time since ’96. Never once losing at Arsenal in North London derbies with Spurs, Postecoglou will be more than happy to announce his arrival to Arteta’s Gunners, who are chasing the title.

London Derbies Add Spice

Besides that, the capital is not only home to two other derbies but also two new London rivalries will spice up the football scene. West Ham will play Tottenham in Saturday’s late game, a clash of contrasting starts: Spurs have kept the best defense in the league with only one goal conceded, while the Hammers’ defense has been breached already four times. On the other hand, Chelsea will visit Brentford. The new Bees’ boss Keith Andrews has hardly come into his own, while Pochettino’s side have been lightning in a bottle this season and look formidable.

Juventus and Inter Renew Rivalry

Italy has been focusing on the Juve derby as the bianconeri take a shot at the nerazzurri. Juve secured a win for the opening of the season, and Jonathan David scored his first goal for the club while Dušan Vlahović regained his scoring touch. On winning the first match Inter coached by Cristian Chivu blew away the enemy 5-0, but then came a surprise home defeat against Udinese. It wouldn’t surprise me if an early season victory in Turin was to set the tone for both sides in the title race.

Barcelona’s Stadium Saga Overshadows LaLiga Return

The Barca stadium issues has somehow overshadowed the rest of LaLiga’s weekend. In the meantime, Flick’s side were preparing to face Valencia at the smaller 6,000-capacity Johan Cruyff Stadium due to the delay in the redevelopment at Camp Nou. It is the smallest LaLiga venue this century and the pressure on the team trying to regain their composure is only heightened by the unusual setting. On the other hand, Real Madrid are going to face Real Sociedad in San Sebastián. For the coach Xabi Alonso, it’s a sentimental trip back to the club where his brilliant career started. Madrid are clear favorites but as we all know from LaLiga, another defeat for the reigning champions is never far around the corner in the Reale Arena like a cat ready to jump on the table.’

This weekend is packed with face-offs full of storylines that will affect the initial course of the largest leagues in Europe from Manchester to Turin to Barcelona.
