North Korea Unveils Airborne Early-Warning Aircraft for the First Time
In a significant military upgrade, North Korea officially revealed an airborne early-warning (AEW) aircraft, potentially enhancing its aging air defense systems. State media released images showing Kim inspecting a Russian-made Il-76 cargo plane modified with a radar dome mounted on its fuselage.
Analysts had previously reported, based on commercial satellite imagery, that North Korea was converting the Il-76 into an AEW aircraft. This move could help overcome limitations posed by mountainous terrain on the Korean Peninsula.
Key Benefits of North Korea’s AEW Aircraft
The key Benefits of North Korea’s AEW aircraft is that it has Enhanced radar coverage to track low-flying aircraft and cruise missiles. Additionally, there’s improved air defense capabilities against potential threats and Strategic advantage in reconnaissance and surveillance
However, experts warn that one AEW aircraft may not be enough, and North Korea might need to repurpose more of its cargo fleet to build additional units.
Russian Influence on North Korea’s Military Upgrades
South Korea’s military expressed skepticism about the operational readiness of the new aircraft, stating it appears “large, heavy, and susceptible to interception.”
When questioned about possible Russian military assistance, South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff spokesperson Lee Sung-jun suggested that Russia may have supplied internal systems and parts for the aircraft.
North Korea’s Drone Warfare and the Ukraine Conflict Experience
Kim Jong Un also inspected new reconnaissance drones, electronic jamming systems, and attack drones. State media photos showed a fixed-wing UAV striking a tank-shaped target, demonstrating its suicide drone capabilities.
Additionally, North Korean troops reportedly deployed in Russia’s war in Ukraine have gained real-world drone warfare experience, further advancing Pyongyang’s unmanned combat strategies.
