A good number of us underrate the power of accessorizing an outfit.
Accessorizing is an art form that can make or mar any outfit. When you put together an outfit that you want to wear, it’s the small details that pull it all together and make it a unique look.
For women who dress modestly, discovering ways to enhance their outfits while remaining true to their style can be a challenge. A simple black dress worn with colorful beads can be worn to the beach day and with a simple change of accessories and footwear, the same black dress can be worn for a night out with a significant other or friends.
When picking the small fashion accessories to incorporate into your attire, look for items that are functional, practical, look great, and make sense style-wise. It is also important to pick out jewellery that you’re comfortable with and screams ‘you’ fashion-wise.
Below are my top tips for choosing accessories:
1. Consider Colors and Patterns:
It is vital to create a relationship between the different accessories you’re wearing when it comes to pattern and color matching your accessories to your outfit.
Look for a common element and use that as a foundation to match your outfit. For instance: A geometric silver shaped earring can be matched with a necklace that has silver on it. Also, adding a silver bracelet to your whole getup doesn’t hurt.
2. Find Your Balance:
It is essential to find a balance between accessorizing different jewellery.
Determine what might be too plain or just too much. Experiment with glamming up your outfits with accessories that feel just right to you, and look appropriate for your outfit. However, remember to factor in the dress code, the place, and the occasion you’re dressing. Always remember that accessories should be an extension of your personality.
If you prefer classic and elegant pieces, then go for delicate earrings or a classic watch, to create a subtle and understated style? Do you tend to like bolder pieces? then colorful, and eye-catching accessories, like a necklace or a pair of bold sunglasses, can help to showcase your more daring and adventurous side.
3. Consider Your Hairstyle:
Believe or not, the length of your hairstyle plays an important part in the choice of accessories you’re to go for. Short or studded earrings and a statement/eye catching necklace go well with a short or tied back hair. On the other hand, dangling earrings go well with longer hair, untied. The other side to this coin is that dangling earrings also goes well with a tied back afro hair and a bald look as well.
4. Consider Your Face Shape:
Choosing the right earrings for your face shape can help to sharpen a rounded face, or soften a sharp look. The length of a well-chosen earring can help balance your face.
- If you have a square/hexagonal face, go for angular dangle earrings.
- If you have a rectangular face, go for wide chandelier-like earrings.
- If you have a round/square face, go for large hoops.
- If you have oval/round face, go for curved dangle earrings.
5. Avoid Over-Accessorizing:
A good rule of thumb is to always wear no more than accessories in your overall look (this includes eyewear, clothing accessories and hair accessories). You don’t need to have a belt, bag, shoes, earrings, chain, bracelet, or ring for each outfit you’re wearing. Note that an over accessorized look often happens when either the accessory pieces are clashing in terms of personality style or it does not complement the occasion you’re going for.
The trick is knowing how much is too much for your outfit. Granted, some occasions require a little extra, it isn’t a standard rule of thumb.
