The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) has uncovered evidence of job racketeering within several ministries and agencies in Nigeria. In a firm response, the Commission has vowed to take swift and decisive action against those involved, signaling a strong stand against corruption.
Speaking during a high-level seminar to commemorate the 2024 International Anti-Corruption Day, ICPC Chairman Musa Aliyu expressed optimism about the nation’s future. He praised Nigerian youths for their growing resistance to corruption, describing their courage as a sign of brighter days ahead.
Aliyu also highlighted the ongoing fight against sexual harassment in tertiary institutions, emphasizing that it remains a top priority for the Commission. He reaffirmed that tackling corruption in all its forms—whether job racketeering, abuse of power, or institutional misconduct—is critical to fostering development and rebuilding public trust.
The Call for Collective Action Against Corruption
The ICPC has stressed the importance of collective action to end corruption in Nigeria, warning of the harm it continues to inflict on the country’s economic and social structures. The agency urged Nigerians to find the courage to expose corrupt practices, emphasizing that public participation is key to overcoming this challenge.
During an event in Yenagoa commemorating Anti-Corruption Day, Ekere Usiere, Resident Anti-Corruption Commissioner, delivered a compelling message on the need for courage. Her presentation, From Fear to Courage: Overcoming Barriers to Whistleblowing in Nigeria, underscored the vital role of citizens in combating corruption.
Usiere acknowledged the challenges but expressed hope that with increased bravery and awareness, Nigerians can push back against the forces of corruption and create a more transparent society.
With the ICPC’s renewed determination and the growing engagement of Nigerians, the fight against corruption is gaining momentum. While challenges remain, the commitment to justice and accountability points toward a future where integrity and fairness prevail.
