The presidential flagbearer of the Labour Party, Peter Obi has broken his silence on the fuel subsidy issue.
Giving his opinion on the whole issue, he said that he actually supports the idea of the fuel subsidy, but the problem is the administration is that they didn’t put enough measures in place to cushion the effects of subsidy, as fuel subsidy itself is an organised crime.
He further said that during Jonathan’s regime they came up with various policies for it’s removal, so one cannot just remove fuel subsidy without making adequate plans in place.
Obi also said that in his manifesto , he made adequate plans to cushion the effects of subsidy removal, he said he was going to save alot from subsidy removal and divert the savings to bettering the lives of Nigerians. Nigerians do not have to suffer and sacrifice for a better future, a future which might not get better
“Recall that even when Jonathan’s government wanted to remove it they came up with various relieving policies like Sure-P and others. If you read my manifesto you will see clearly how I planned to remove subsidies. I will govern with the people and show them statistically and empirically what we are going to save, and what we are going to do using the savings to better the suffering masses.
“The problem in Nigeria is that often government tell the masses to suffer and sacrifice, for a better future; but in future things gets worse,” he added.
