Modest Bundesliga side Union Berlin continue their bid to maintain their top-flight status today when they host German football’s biggest and best clubside Bayern Munich this afternoon with Nigerian star Taiwo Awoniyi leading the attack for the minnows.
With seven league goals in nine games, Awoniyi is majorly responsible for why Berlin are perched in fifth place on the log and his blistering form which has seen him plunder 12 goals in all competitions this season is already forcing the big guns to take note of the big 24-year old striker.
Bayern, first in the table with 22 points to Union Berlin’s 16 points from as many games, have a goal machine of their own in Robert Lewandowski who leads the topscorers’ chart with 10 goals but the Bavarians are notorious for poaching good players from other Bundesliga teams, especially those who impress against them. Lewandowski, like others, was snapped up from Borussia Dortmund.
So, this afternoon at the Alte Foersterei, Berlin will leverage on their good home form which has seen them grab 11 points at home to hurt Bayern who are also good travellers with 10 points gained on the road.
The previous two meetings between both sides have ended in identical 1-1 draws with Marcus Ingvartsen’s 85th minute goal cancelling out Jamal Musiala’s lead for Bayern last April.
Earlier, last December 20th, Awoniyi was on for 89 minutes as both sides played out another 1-1 draw, with Lewandowski forcing the game into a stalemate in the 67th minute after Grischa Promel had scored for Berlin in the 4th minute.
A lot has happened in the past 10 months since December and Awoniyi is a better player pumped full of confidence with his goals rush and he could be putting himself in the shop window for the Bavarian giants to see and take note this afternoon.
