The escalating conflict between nuclear-armed neighbors India and Pakistan has had a significant impact on the world of cricket, with the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announcing the suspension of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 for one week.
In a similar manner, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to postpone the remaining matches of the Pakistan Super League (PSL) in light of the heightened tensions.
The BCCI secretary, Devajit Saikia, stated on Friday that the decision to suspend the remainder of the IPL 2025 with immediate effect for one week was made after consulting with the franchises and players.
The IPL governing council deemed it “prudent to act in the collective interest of all stakeholders” given the prevailing circumstances. Saikia emphasized that while cricket holds immense national passion in India, “there is nothing greater than the nation and its sovereignty, integrity, and security of our country.”
He further affirmed the BCCI’s unwavering commitment to supporting all efforts that safeguard India and aligning its decisions with the nation’s best interests. Regarding the potential return of foreign players and support staff who might feel uneasy, Saikia clarified that such decisions would be left to the individual IPL franchises.
IPL Match Abandoned, Another Shifted Due to India-Pakistan Border Tension
The immediate impact of the conflict on the IPL 2025 was evident on Friday when a scheduled match in Dharamsala was abandoned midway through, with organizers citing a power outage. Furthermore, a Sunday game also slated for Dharamsala was proactively shifted to Ahmedabad due to the escalating border tension between India and Pakistan.
These disruptions show the direct influence of the geopolitical situation on the Indian Premier League. The current crisis erupted after India conducted strikes on multiple locations within Pakistan on Wednesday, claiming these were “terrorist camps” in retaliation for a deadly attack in Indian Kashmir last month, which India attributed to Islamabad. Pakistan has denied any involvement in the Kashmir attack, but both nations have since engaged in cross-border firing and shelling, as well as reported drone and missile incursions into each other’s airspace, resulting in a tragic loss of nearly four dozen lives.
The IPL 2025 still has twelve group matches remaining, followed by the playoffs, with the final scheduled for May 25 in Kolkata. The BCCI secretary announced that new dates and venues for the remaining IPL matches would be declared “in due course.”
Pakistan Cricket Board Postpones PSL Matches Amidst Regional Conflict
The repercussions of the India-Pakistan conflict have extended across the border, affecting the Pakistan Super League as well. The PCB initially considered relocating the final eight PSL games to the United Arab Emirates.
However, a later announcement on Friday revealed that the PCB had decided to postpone the matches entirely, acting on the advice of Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. The PCB stated that cricket “must take a respectful pause” in the face of the ongoing conflict.
The Pakistan Cricket Board acknowledged the efforts and support of its partners, franchises, participating players, broadcasters, sponsors, and organizers in ensuring the smooth progression of the tournament up to this point.
The PCB also expressed its sincere regard for the mental well-being of participating players and the sentiments of its foreign players, respecting the concerns of their families who wish to see them return home during this period of heightened regional tension between India and Pakistan, which has led to the suspension of the IPL and the postponement of the PSL.
