The independent electoral commission (INEC) has announced a six days extension of the primaries. INEC had given political parties until the 3rd of June to conduct their primary elections which some political parties had protested against and begged the commission to extend.
The commission in a statement signed by Festus Okoye, Information and Voter Education Committee, on Friday has now given in to their pleas and extended the date to the 9th of June. The commission had met with the leadership of political parties in Abuja to review the date. This extension only applies to the primary elections that have not been conducted and this extension would not affect the planned activities for the 2023 elections as the commission had not planned any activity from the 4th of June to the 9th of June.
The next activity for political parties after the primary election is the uploading of qualified candidates on the nomination portal. The commission has however directed the parties to send four of their delegates to train for the uploading of the nominees on the portal as only online submissions would be processed by the commission.
