Nigeria’s electoral body INEC has given reasons, for not having published a comprehensive voters list for the 2023 general election.
INEC Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, who had announced at the stakeholders’ validation meeting which had held in FCT, Abuja on Tuesday, September 6, had reported that the rumors of them (the body) being unwilling to publish the comprehensive voters’ register as provided by section 19(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022, was well and truly false.
He disclosed that the list would be soon released and that it will include the new voters registered under the last Continuous Voter Registration -CVR.
In a statement, Yakubu had said;
“We wish to assure Nigerians that the commission will display the comprehensive register in all the 8,809 wards and 774 local government areas/area councils in the country as envisaged in section 19(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022. This will add fresh voters registered during the last CVR to the existing register of more than 84 million voters.
“The date will be revealed as soon as the commission tidies up the ongoing automated biometric identification system -ABIS, to remove all double/multiple as well as ineligible registrants. We plead with some of our friends in civil society organizations to be guided accordingly.”
