Some suspected hoodlums, numbering about eight persons, were said to have climbed the perimeter fence, jumped into the compound and set the INEC building at Iyana, Abeokuta on fire from the back side.
According to Daily Post newspapers, the vagabonds had dipped loaves of bread in petrol and threw them into the building, in bid to raze the place down. The security guard stationed at the facility had dialled the police around 1 am, early in the morning, reporting that the electoral building was on fire.
The police officers from Ibara division had then mobilised detectives to the scene, and contacted firefighters, who then put out the inferno.
From reports, it was gathered that the store, the Registration Area Officer’s office and the conference room were all affected by the blaze. Additionally, certain non-sensitive materials had also been affected by the fire. However according to a source, there had been no casualty and nobody had been injured from the fire.
Meanwhile, the state INEC Resident Electoral Commissioner, Niyi Ijalaye, have confirmed the incident, describing it as shocking and very untoward.
