Nigerian singer and songwriter Johnny Drille has spoken candidly about his connection with the church and how his style of music has extended beyond traditional Christian boundaries.

In a recent appearance on the CreativiTEA podcast, the Mavin Records artist explained that while his belief in God remains unwavering, he has never fully felt that his songs were meant to be confined within the church setting.

“I love God and I’m very much involved in church, but I never really felt my music was for church. Sometimes I get invited to perform in church, which is quite interesting,” he said.

Johnny Drille also addressed the criticisms he sometimes faces from members of the Christian community whenever he performs in churches.

Inside Johnny Drille’s Struggle Between Faith and Music

“I’ve gotten some backlash from the Christian community whenever I perform in churches. But the truth is my music spreads positivity. It touches the issues the church tries to avoid,” he noted.

The soulful singer, widely admired for his emotional and thoughtful lyrics, further expressed that the church often overlooks discussions about love — a topic he believes is both spiritual and necessary.

“The church shies away from talking about love. You go to Christian weddings, you hear Davido and Wizkid songs. What if the church decides that we want to start doing their own Christian love songs,” he added.
