Inter Miami have appointed former Argentina midfielder Javier Mascherano as the club’s new head coach in a move that reunites him with longtime teammate Lionel Messi. The 40-year-old, who signed through 2027, replaces Gerardo “Tata” Martino, who stepped down citing personal reasons.
Mascherano-who was nicknamed “The Little Boss”-had a storied playing career for clubs such as River Plate, Corinthians, Liverpool, and Barcelona with Messi. He also featured in several World Cups with the senior national team. This would make his first club managerial appointment from a head coach role in various of Argentina’s youth teams, which included their U-23 Olympic squad.
It’s an honour to become Inter Miami head coach and I’m excited to assist the club in reaching new heights,” Mascherano said. “The ambition and structure here are impressive, and I hope to give the fans even more unforgettable moments.
Inter Miami created history in the MLS, finishing first in the regular season with a record 74 points to capture the Supporters Shield, but bowing out of the playoffs.
Mascherano will manage a star-studded squad that includes former Barcelona teammates Luis Suárez, Jordi Alba, and Sergio Busquets, in addition to Messi. Managing owner Jorge Mas expressed confidence, citing Mascherano’s blend of world-class playing and coaching experience as key to the appointment.
