Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State recently took decisive action by suspending all the chairmen and councillors in the local government areas of the state. This step was taken in response to allegations of financial impropriety brought against them by the state legislature. The governor appointed interim management committees to oversee the affairs of the council areas during the investigations. However, the former council officials, who were members of the All Progressives Congress, rejected their suspension and vowed to remain in their offices.
In light of these developments, Governor Mutfwang affirmed the legality of the leadership changes he implemented in all 17 Local Government Areas of the state. He emphasized that this decision would not be reversed. The governor’s response came after the state Commissioner of Police, acting on the orders of the Inspector General of Police, sealed all 17 Local Government Secretariats in the state.
In a statement released by the Governor’s Director of Press and Public Affairs, Gyang Bere, Governor Mutfwang urged citizens to remain calm and avoid any form of provocation. He assured them that the government was taking lawful steps to restore the Local Government system, facilitating substantial development at the grassroots level. Furthermore, the governor emphasized that the security of lives and property was of utmost importance to his administration, as it laid the foundation for all forms of growth and development. He acknowledged that building a united and secure Plateau State required collective efforts, and the government was actively addressing the current issues at the local government level.
“The Governor reassures Plateau State citizens that the security of lives and property remains the topmost priority of his administration as it is the foundation that gives birth to all forms of growth and development.”
“He noted that the task of building a united and secure Plateau is a collective one and the government is making frantic efforts to address the current happenings at the local government level.”
The leadership at the state level in Nigeria appears to be improving, with various states implementing notable reforms. It is commendable that newly elected governors are placing significant emphasis on internal affairs within their states.
