Universal Studios has taken a significant step at the possibility of erecting a major theme park and resort in the UK.
The US-based entertainment giant has registered its name as a trademark with the UK Intellectual Property Office, specifically in connection with an amusement park, theme park, and waterpark. This move has ignited speculation about the company’s plans for a large site acquired in 2023.
Universal Studio’s Trademark Application Details
Universal Studios’ trademark application extends beyond just the park itself. It covers a wide range of services, including advertising, hotels, restaurants, bars, cafes, and various amusements.
The application also encompasses “presentation of live show performances, entertainment services, namely, live appearances by costumed characters,” and “conducting guided tours of motion picture and television production facilities including exhibitions and demonstrations.”
This broad coverage suggests that Universal is considering a comprehensive entertainment destination.
Kempston Hardwick Site: Potential Location for UK Theme Park
In 2023, Universal Destinations and Experiences acquired a sprawling 476-acre (193-hectare) site in Kempston Hardwick, near Bedford. This purchase fueled rumors of a potential Universal Studios theme park and resort experience in the UK.
While the company has yet to officially confirm its intentions for the site, the trademark filing strongly suggests that plans are in motion.
A spokeswoman for Universal Studios stated, “We continue to evaluate the potential project and are engaged in productive discussions with the UK government.”
This statement indicates that while the project is not yet finalized, Universal is actively exploring the possibility and working with government officials.
Treasury Minister Confirms Ongoing Negotiations but Says No More
Treasury minister Darren Jones has acknowledged that negotiations are ongoing between the government and Universal Studios regarding the proposed development.
He stated, “The government is in negotiations with partners for this development and unfortunately I can’t update the house at this stage but I look forward to doing so in due course.”
This confirms that high-level discussions are taking place, although specific details remain confidential.
The possibility of a Universal Studios theme park in the UK has generated considerable excitement.
Such a development would most likely become a major tourist attraction, bringing significant economic benefits to the region and the country as a whole. The potential park could create numerous jobs and attract millions of visitors annually.
