Despite these assertions, residents in Jabalia reported sustained aerial bombardment and tank shelling, with Israeli forces reportedly advancing further into the town on Saturday.
The Israeli military whom is facing resilient opposition, announced eight soldiers killed on Sunday. This brings its published combat losses to 154 since the ground incursion began in response to Hamas‘ October 7 actions. This included an incursion into Israel by militants, resulting in 1,200 deaths and 240 hostages.
U.S. President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussed the Israeli campaign, emphasizing the protection of civilians and facilitating their safe movement away from conflict zones.
The leaders also highlighted the importance of securing the release of remaining hostages. While the U.S. continues to support Israel, it expresses concern about the casualty toll and the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. U.S. officials anticipate Israel transitioning to a lower-intensity phase.
Netanyahu, during a weekly cabinet meeting, denied claims that the United States had dissuaded an expansion of the military campaign. The Wall Street Journal had reported concerns that attacking Hezbollah in Lebanon might provoke retaliation against Israel.
