Israel has received a shipment of MK-84 bombs from the United States after former U.S. President Donald Trump lifted restrictions imposed by the previous administration of Joe Biden. The Israeli Defense Ministry confirmed the arrival of the munitions on Sunday, emphasizing the significance of the shipment for the country’s military capabilities.
Trump Reverses Biden’s Decision on Bomb Exports to Israel
The MK-84 bomb is a powerful 2,000-pound unguided weapon capable of penetrating thick concrete and metal, creating a massive blast radius. The Biden administration initially blocked the export of these bombs due to concerns about their impact on densely populated areas, particularly in the Gaza Strip.
However, following the Oct. 7, 2023, attack by Hamas militants from Gaza, the U.S. sent thousands of these bombs to Israel before later halting further shipments. Trump reversed this hold last month, allowing the latest batch of bombs to reach Israel.
Israeli Officials Welcome the Arrival of the MK-84 Bombs
Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz hailed the shipment as a major boost for the Israeli Air Force and the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). “The munitions shipment that arrived in Israel tonight, released by the Trump Administration, represents a significant asset for the Air Force and the IDF and serves as further evidence of the strong alliance between Israel and the United States,” he said late on Saturday.
Ceasefire Tensions and Continued U.S. Support for Israel
The delivery of these weapons comes at a critical time when tensions remain high over a fragile ceasefire agreement in Gaza. Both Israel and Palestinian groups have accused each other of violating the terms of the truce, which was intended to facilitate the exchange of hostages and prisoners. Meanwhile, Washington has continued to provide Israel with billions of dollars in military assistance since the conflict began, reinforcing its longstanding support for the country.
