The Israeli military has confirmed the recent video showing an Israeli soldier strapping a wounded Palestinian man to the front of their vehicle during a raid in the West Bank city of Jenin. The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) acknowledged that the actions of the individuals involved breached military protocols.

Details of the Incident

According to an IDF statement, the man, who was suspected of involvement in terrorist activities, was injured during an exchange of gunfire in the raid. His family reported that when they requested an ambulance, the army instead strapped him to the bonnet of their jeep and drove away. The injured individual was later handed over to the Red Crescent for medical treatment. Eyewitnesses identified the man as Mujahed Azmi.

IDF Statement

The IDF provided a detailed account of the operation, stating, “This morning [Saturday], during counter-terrorism operations to apprehend wanted suspects in the area of Wadi Burqin, terrorists opened fire at IDF troops, who responded with fire.” During this exchange, one suspect was injured and subsequently apprehended. However, in a breach of standard operating procedures, the suspect was transported tied to the vehicle.

“The conduct of the forces in the video of the incident does not conform to the values of the IDF. The incident will be investigated and dealt with accordingly,” the statement concluded.

Context of Increased Violence

The incident occurred amidst a surge in violence in the West Bank, which has been ongoing since the start of the war in the Gaza Strip, triggered by Hamas’s attack on southern Israel on October 7.

The UN reports that at least 480 Palestinians, including members of armed groups, attackers, and civilians, have been killed in conflict-related incidents in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

Bottom Line

The IDF’s confirmation of the video and acknowledgment of protocol violation highlights the ongoing tensions and complex dynamics in the region. The investigation into the incident is a step towards addressing the breach of conduct, amidst a backdrop of escalating violence in the West Bank.
