Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon and on the outskirts of Beirut on Friday claimed the lives of at least five medics, according to the Lebanese health ministry. The strikes coincided with fierce ground clashes between Israeli forces and Hezbollah fighters along Lebanon’s southern border. Over the past year, more than 3,500 people, including over 200 medics, have been killed by Israeli strikes, the ministry reported.
Ongoing Military Campaign
The Israeli military continues its aggressive campaign against Hezbollah, an Iran-backed armed group, tempering hopes for a ceasefire. Ground troops have pushed deeper into Lebanese territory, advancing toward Khiyam, a town located approximately six kilometers from the border. Hezbollah responded by firing rockets at Israeli forces east of Khiyam and other villages in the region. Analysts believe the Israeli forces aim to isolate Khiyam ahead of a significant assault.

Diplomatic Efforts for a Ceasefire
U.S. envoy Amos Hochstein, who visited Beirut earlier this week, had expressed optimism about a potential ceasefire, calling it “within our grasp.” Following meetings with Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Israel Katz, Hochstein returned to Washington, though no immediate truce has been announced.
Strikes on Beirut Suburbs
Israeli airstrikes also targeted the southern suburbs of Beirut, a Hezbollah stronghold. Evacuation orders for several buildings in the area were issued via social media. Footage showed one airstrike hitting a multi-story building, causing it to collapse in a massive cloud of smoke.
Context of the Conflict
The escalation in hostilities follows a year of heightened tensions and military actions along the Israel-Lebanon border, which intensified after Israel deployed ground troops into Lebanon in October 2023. Hezbollah began cross-border rocket attacks in support of Hamas during the Gaza war, prompting Israeli evacuations from northern towns. Israel maintains that its operations aim to secure the return of these displaced citizens and curb Hezbollah’s influence in the region.
Bottom Line
The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah shows no signs of abating despite diplomatic efforts. The human cost continues to rise, with significant casualties among civilians and medics, underscoring the urgent need for a sustainable resolution.
