United States Vice-President JD Vance and his wife, Second Lady Usha Vance, have welcomed their fourth child, making history as the first sitting US vice-president to have a baby while in office in more than 150 years.
The couple announced on Sunday that their son, Alec Neel Vance, was born earlier in the day. He joins his older siblings, Ewan, nine, Vivek, six, and Mirabel, four.
Sharing the news in a joint statement posted on social media, the couple wrote: “We are excited to announce that our baby boy, Alec Neel Vance, was born this morning. Usha and the baby are happy and healthy, and our kids are overjoyed to meet their little brother.”
They also expressed appreciation to the medical personnel who assisted during the delivery, thanking staff at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center and the White House medical team.
The birth comes as Vance continues to champion larger families, a position he has consistently promoted since entering politics. During the 2025 March for Life rally in Washington, the vice-president declared, “I want more babies in the United States of America.”
Vance has also previously suggested that the 2025 killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, whom he described as a close friend, influenced his family’s decision to have another child.
The 41-year-old vice-president and his 40-year-old wife have often travelled abroad with their children, who have frequently accompanied them on official trips aboard Air Force Two.
Usha Vance, the daughter of Indian immigrants, attracted increased public attention after the couple announced her pregnancy in January, as it is uncommon for occupants of America’s highest offices to expand their families while serving.
According to the White House Historical Association, the last sitting US vice-president to welcome a child was Schuyler Colfax, whose son, Schuyler Colfax III, was born in 1870 while he held office. Before him, Vice-President John C. Calhoun welcomed his son William in 1829.
The Vance family’s newest addition also comes amid a wave of births within President Donald Trump’s administration. White House deputy chief of staff Stephen Miller and his wife, Katie Miller, recently welcomed their fourth child, while White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt gave birth to her second child in May.
In recent weeks, Usha Vance also drew public attention after a fashion column highlighted the maternity dress she wore during a Father’s Day edition of her “Storytime with the Second Lady” podcast, which she launched while expecting her fourth child.
